This was a battle won by Filipinos against the Americans. On September 17, 1900 the Americans, under Colonel Benjamin F. Cheatham, Jr., attacked the Filipinos under Gen. Juan Cailles, who were holding a high defensive position just beyond the waters of Laguna de Bay off Siniloan. The Americans were badly mauled by the defenders sustaining heavy casualties from the relentless fire of well-placed Filipino snipers. Even supporting fire from the US navy gunboat and an attempted flank attack failed to dislodge the Filipinos. The US Army reported 21 killed and 23 wounded. But the Filipinos reported 180 dead and wounded American troopers.
