“Victory and Humanity: Upholding Filipino Heritage and Identity”
The month of May was designated National Heritage Month by Proclamation No. 439 as this is the month when most fiestas, festivals and other indigenous activities are celebrated. It was chosen as the right time to galvanize people’s awareness of cultural sites, structures, and landscapes; encourage protection of cultural legacies; and project, promote and celebrate our people’s multi-cultural tradition.
This year’s celebration is anchored its theme with the Quincentennial celebration of the Victory of Mactan and the 500th Anniversary of the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world. The Philippines is also celebrating the 500 years of Christian legacy.
The Philippines is still reeling under the effects of wave after wave of Covid-19 pandemic crisis. Curtailment of social and economic activities is still being strictly implemented. Celebratory and commemorative events are now more effectively held through the social media. Indeed, a whole new world unaffected by the pandemic is seemingly flourishing and bursting with cultural and economic activities. The social media now makes it possible for people to travel anywhere without leaving the comforts and safety of their homes.
The skillful use of modern technology in social media is successfully encouraging people to respect and love Filipino cultural legacies. The Provincial government of Laguna, in collaboration with Virtual Reality Travel, and SMART Communications now brings historical sites and structures in Laguna for our people to appreciate. For history brings unity.
